During a session for an Americana artist, I might choose to play a classic P-bass with flat-wound strings to get a warm, vintage sound. If I play a live gig and am expected to solo, I’ll choose a guitar with sharper tone and a slimmer neck. Familiarity and access to a variety of instruments is essential to being a working professional.
