Each instrument has character — the tonal possibilities, setup and overall feel of the instrument will inspire you to play a certain way. I enjoy knowing what each instrument in my arsenal is capable of and what it will bring to the music.

During a session for an Americana artist, I might choose to play a classic P-bass with flat-wound strings to get a warm, vintage sound. If I play a live gig and am expected to solo, I’ll choose an instrument with sharper tone and a slimmer neck. Familiarity and access to a variety of instruments is essential to being a working professional.
